〜ようとしない／〜ようとはしない

Describes someone who will not even try to do something, often with the speaker's criticism, frustration or puzzlement. The subject is normally a third person (or an animal/child), not the speaker, since we know our own intentions. Adding は (〜ようとはしない) strengthens the sense of stubborn refusal. Compare 〜ようとする, which means 'be about to / try to'.

• 子どもが野菜を食べようとしない。

  こどもが やさいを たべようと しない。

  My child won't even try to eat vegetables.

• 彼は自分の間違いを認めようとしなかった。

  かれは じぶんの まちがいを みとめようと しなかった。

  He refused to admit his own mistake.

• 何度説明しても、彼女は話を聞こうとはしない。

  なんど せつめいしても、かのじょは はなしを きこうとは しない。

  No matter how often I explain, she simply won't listen.
