〜てもかまわない

Used to give permission or to show that some condition is acceptable to the speaker. It is slightly more detached than 〜てもいい: it conveys 'I have no objection' rather than active approval, so granting permission to a superior with it can sound presumptuous. The negative 〜なくてもかまわない means 'you don't have to'; in casual speech people say 〜てもかまいません/〜ても構わない in writing and formal speech.

• ここで写真を撮ってもかまいませんか。

  ここで しゃしんを とっても かまいませんか。

  Do you mind if I take photos here?

• 部屋は少し狭くてもかまいません。

  へやは すこし せまくても かまいません。

  I don't mind if the room is a bit small.

• 急がないので、明日までに出さなくてもかまわないよ。

  いそがないので、あしたまでに ださなくても かまわないよ。

  There's no rush, so you don't have to hand it in by tomorrow.
