〜にわたって

States that an action or state extends over a whole period, area or number of times — 三年, 全国, 十回 and similar nouns of extent. It stresses the scale or breadth of the span and is common in formal or written Japanese such as reports and news. Compare 〜を通じて (over the whole period, focusing on continuity throughout) and note that 〜にわたって cannot take a single point in time.

• 会議は三時間にわたって続いた。

  かいぎはさんじかんにわたってつづいた。

  The meeting went on for three whole hours.

• 台風の影響は広い範囲にわたっている。

  たいふうのえいきょうはひろいはんいにわたっている。

  The effects of the typhoon extend over a wide area.

• 十年にわたる研究がついに実を結んだ。

  じゅうねんにわたるけんきゅうがついにみをむすんだ。

  Ten years of research have finally borne fruit.
