〜を通じて／〜を通して

Two uses: (1) 'by means of / via' a person, medium or experience, and (2) 'throughout' a whole period or area, where the state holds without interruption (一年を通じて). The two variants are largely interchangeable; 〜を通して tends to stress the speaker's active use of the means, 〜を通じて is a little more formal and common in the 'throughout' sense. With periods, use it when continuity matters; 〜にわたって instead stresses the sheer length or extent.

• 友人を通じて彼女と知り合いました。

  ゆうじんをつうじてかのじょとしりあいました。

  I got to know her through a friend.

• この地方は一年を通して雨が多い。

  このちほうはいちねんをとおしてあめがおおい。

  It rains a lot in this region all year round.

• ボランティア活動を通して、多くのことを学びました。

  ボランティアかつどうをとおして、おおくのことをまなびました。

  I learned a great deal through volunteer work.
