〜にもかかわらず

Expresses a strong contrast: from A one would expect one thing, but the opposite happened. It is more formal and emphatic than 〜のに and is frequent in writing, news and polite speech; it often carries surprise, or gratitude in set phrases like お忙しいにもかかわらず. Note that な-adjectives and nouns attach directly (静かにもかかわらず／雨にもかかわらず), without だ.

• 雨にもかかわらず、試合は行われた。

  あめにもかかわらず、しあいはおこなわれた。

  The match was held in spite of the rain.

• 彼は何度も失敗したにもかかわらず、あきらめなかった。

  かれはなんどもしっぱいしたにもかかわらず、あきらめなかった。

  Although he failed many times, he never gave up.

• お忙しいにもかかわらず、お越しいただきありがとうございます。

  おいそがしいにもかかわらず、おこしいただきありがとうございます。
