〜にしたがって

Main use: two things change together — as A progresses, B changes along with it (時間がたつにしたがって). Both clauses must express gradual change, so it does not fit one-off events. A second use with nouns means 'in accordance with' rules or instructions (指示にしたがって). 〜にしたがい is the written variant; 〜につれて is close in meaning but only has the 'as A changes' use.

• 山を登るにしたがって、気温が下がってきた。

  やまをのぼるにしたがって、きおんがさがってきた。

  As we climbed the mountain, the temperature dropped.

• 年をとるにしたがって、時間がたつのが速く感じられる。

  としをとるにしたがって、じかんがたつのがはやくかんじられる。

  As you get older, time seems to pass more quickly.

• 係員の指示にしたがって、避難してください。

  かかりいんのしじにしたがって、ひなんしてください。

  Please evacuate in accordance with the staff's instructions.
