〜とともに

Has three uses: (1) doing something together with a person or thing, (2) 'A and at the same time B' for two coexisting qualities or events, and (3) parallel change, close to 〜につれて. It is a written, somewhat formal expression; in conversation 〜と一緒に is used for meaning (1). With change, both clauses should describe gradual movement.

• 卒業生は家族とともに写真を撮った。

  そつぎょうせいはかぞくとともにしゃしんをとった。

  The graduates took photos together with their families.

• この町は工業が発展するとともに、人口も増えていった。

  このまちはこうぎょうがはってんするとともに、じんこうもふえていった。

  As industry developed in this town, the population grew as well.

• 彼は研究者であるとともに、優れた教育者でもある。

  かれはけんきゅうしゃであるとともに、すぐれたきょういくしゃでもある。

  He is a researcher and at the same time an excellent educator.
