〜に反して

Says that the result went against an expectation, prediction, rule or wish. The noun before it is usually an abstract one such as 予想, 期待, 予測, 命令, 規則, 意思. It is formal and written; for everyday speech 〜と違って or 〜のに is more natural. 〜に反する/に反した are the noun-modifying forms.

• 予想に反して、試験は簡単だった。

  よそうにはんして、しけんはかんたんだった。

  Contrary to expectations, the exam was easy.

• 周囲の期待に反し、彼はチームを去った。

  しゅういのきたいにはんし、かれはチームをさった。

  Against everyone's expectations, he left the team.

• 事実に反する報道は許されない。

  じじつにはんするほうどうはゆるされない。

  Reporting that goes against the facts cannot be permitted.
