〜どころか

Denies A strongly and then presents B, which is far beyond or the exact opposite of A. Two typical shapes: 'not only not A, but actually the opposite' (寒いどころか暑い) and 'let alone A, even B (a smaller thing) is impossible' (漢字どころかひらがなも書けない). The speaker's tone is emphatic and often surprised or critical, and it is common in conversation.

• あの店は安いどころか、駅前より高かった。

  あのみせはやすいどころか、えきまえよりたかかった。

  Far from being cheap, that shop was more expensive than the one by the station.

• 忙しくて、旅行どころか買い物にも行けない。

  いそがしくて、りょこうどころかかいものにもいけない。

  I'm so busy that, let alone a trip, I can't even go shopping.

• 謝るどころか、彼は笑っていた。

  あやまるどころか、かれはわらっていた。

  Far from apologising, he was laughing.
