〜ばかりか／〜ばかりでなく

Adds a second, usually more extreme or surprising, fact to the first one; the second clause often contains も, まで or さえ. ばかりか tends to carry more emotional surprise (good or bad), while ばかりでなく is closer to neutral 〜だけでなく and is used a little more freely. It is not used for requests, orders or invitations in the second clause, unlike 〜だけでなく.

• 彼は英語ばかりか、フランス語も話せる。

  かれはえいごばかりか、ふらんすごもはなせる。

  He can speak not only English but French as well.

• あの店は値段が安いばかりでなく、品物の質もいい。

  あのみせはねだんがやすいばかりでなく、しなもののしつもいい。

  That shop is not only cheap, the quality of the goods is good too.

• 台風で電車が止まったばかりか、停電まで起きてしまった。

  たいふうででんしゃがとまったばかりか、ていでんまでおきてしまった。

  Because of the typhoon, not only did the trains stop, there was even a blackout.
