〜のみならず

A stiff, written equivalent of 〜だけでなく, common in news reports, essays and formal speeches. The second clause often expands the scope to a wider group and is marked with も or 〜まで. Avoid it in casual conversation, where だけでなく sounds much more natural.

• この薬は子供のみならず、大人にも効果がある。

  このくすりはこどものみならず、おとなにもこうかがある。

  This medicine is effective not only for children but for adults as well.

• 環境問題は一国のみならず、世界全体の課題である。

  かんきょうもんだいはいっこくのみならず、せかいぜんたいのかだいである。

  Environmental problems are an issue not just for one country but for the whole world.

• 彼女は成績が優秀であるのみならず、スポーツにも秀でている。

  かのじょはせいせきがゆうしゅうであるのみならず、すぽーつにもひいでている。

  She not only has excellent grades but also excels at sports.
