〜に沿って

Has two uses: physically moving along a line (a river, a road, the coast), and figuratively acting in line with guidelines, policy, expectations or a manual. In the figurative use the noun is usually 方針, 計画, マニュアル, ご希望, 期待. Compare 〜に基づいて, which points to a legal or factual basis, while 〜に沿って points to a direction or standard one follows without deviating.

• 川に沿って歩くと、小さな公園がある。

  かわにそってあるくと、ちいさなこうえんがある。

  If you walk along the river, there is a small park.

• 会社の方針に沿って仕事を進めてください。

  かいしゃのほうしんにそってしごとをすすめてください。

  Please carry out the work in line with company policy.

• お客様のご希望に沿った商品をご提案いたします。

  おきゃくさまのごきぼうにそったしょうひんをごていあんいたします。

  We will suggest products that match your wishes.
