〜をはじめ

Names one representative or most important member of a group and implies many other similar things follow. The noun before it should be the most prominent example, not a random one. 〜をはじめとする is used to modify a following noun. Typical of written Japanese, speeches and news; often paired with など at the end.

• 日本では、東京をはじめ、大きな町が多い。

  にほんでは、とうきょうをはじめ、おおきなまちがおおい。

  In Japan there are many big cities, starting with Tokyo.

• 校長先生をはじめ、多くの先生方が出席してくださった。

  こうちょうせんせいをはじめ、おおくのせんせいがたがしゅっせきしてくださった。

  Many teachers attended, beginning with the principal.

• アジアをはじめとする世界各国から留学生が集まっている。

  あじあをはじめとするせかいかっこくからりゅうがくせいがあつまっている。

  Foreign students gather from countries all over the world, above all from Asia.
