〜恐れがある

States an objective possibility that something undesirable will happen. It belongs to written and formal Japanese — news reports, weather warnings, official notices — and is not used for everyday small worries or for the speaker's personal misfortune. Only negative outcomes can follow; 〜恐れはない denies the risk. Compare 〜かねない, which is more subjective and usually attaches to a person's action.

• 台風が上陸する恐れがあります。

  たいふうがじょうりくするおそれがあります。

  There is a risk that the typhoon will make landfall.

• この薬は、副作用の恐れがあるので注意してください。

  このくすりは、ふくさようのおそれがあるのでちゅういしてください。

  Please be careful, as this medicine carries a risk of side effects.

• 対策を取らなければ、被害がさらに広がる恐れがある。

  たいさくをとらなければ、ひがいがさらにひろがるおそれがある。

  If no measures are taken, the damage may well spread further.
