〜ことなく

A written, somewhat formal equivalent of 〜ないで, used to say that an action continues or is carried out without some expected accompanying action ever happening. It often appears with verbs like 休む・変わる・あきらめる and pairs well with expressions of continuation. Avoid it in casual conversation, where 〜ないで is far more natural.

• 彼は一度も休むことなく働き続けた。

  かれはいちどもやすむことなくはたらきつづけた。

  He kept working without taking a single break.

• この町の景色は昔と変わることなく美しい。

  このまちのけしきはむかしとかわることなくうつくしい。

  The scenery of this town is as beautiful as ever, unchanged from the old days.

• 彼女は最後まであきらめることなく挑戦を続けた。

  かのじょはさいごまであきらめることなくちょうせんをつづけた。

  She kept challenging herself to the end without giving up.
