〜つつも

The concessive use of つつ with emphasis added by も: the speaker does something that contradicts what they know, think or say. It very often describes the speaker's own inconsistency or guilt (悪いと知りつつも, 迷惑だと思いつつも). The register is somewhat formal or written; in everyday speech 〜のに or 〜けど is more common, and the subject of both clauses must be the same.

• 悪いと知りつつも、うそをついてしまった。

  わるいとしりつつも、うそをついてしまった。

  Even though I knew it was wrong, I ended up lying.

• ダイエット中と言いつつも、彼女は毎晩ケーキを食べている。

  ダイエットちゅうといいつつも、かのじょはまいばんケーキをたべている。

  Although she says she's on a diet, she eats cake every night.

• 迷惑だと思いつつも、はっきり断れなかった。

  めいわくだとおもいつつも、はっきりことわれなかった。

  Though I found it a nuisance, I couldn't refuse clearly.
