〜たところで

Expresses the speaker's judgment that even if the action is carried out, the result will be pointless or negative; the second clause is therefore negative or dismissive (無駄だ, 〜ない, 変わらない). It is often reinforced by いくら, どんなに, 今から. Unlike 〜ても, it cannot be used for a favourable or neutral outcome, and the main clause states the speaker's opinion or guess, not a past fact.

• 今から走ったところで、間に合わないよ。

  いまからはしったところで、まにあわないよ。

  Even if you run now, you won't make it in time.

• いくら謝ったところで、彼は許してくれないだろう。

  いくらあやまったところで、かれはゆるしてくれないだろう。

  No matter how much you apologize, he probably won't forgive you.

• 私が意見を言ったところで、何も変わらない。

  わたしがいけんをいったところで、なにもかわらない。

  Even if I voice my opinion, nothing will change.
