〜とはいえ

Used when the speaker acknowledges a fact and then says the expected consequence does not really follow. It is a written, somewhat formal expression, frequent in essays, news and speeches, and can also start a sentence as 'とはいえ、…' meaning 'that said, …'. Unlike 〜としても, which supposes something hypothetical, 〜とはいえ takes something already established as true.

• 春とはいえ、まだ風が冷たい。

  はるとはいえ、まだかぜがつめたい。

  Although it's spring, the wind is still cold.

• 仕事に慣れたとはいえ、まだ失敗が多い。

  しごとになれたとはいえ、まだしっぱいがおおい。

  Even though I've gotten used to the job, I still make a lot of mistakes.

• 景気は回復しつつある。とはいえ、油断はできない。

  けいきはかいふくしつつある。とはいえ、ゆだんはできない。

  The economy is recovering. That said, we can't let our guard down.
