〜と言っても

The speaker first uses a word or claim, then immediately scales down the impression it creates, so the second clause usually contains words like ほんの, 少し, たった or a negative. It is common in conversation, often as a modest correction of what the listener might imagine. Note the difference from 〜とはいえ: 〜と言っても comments on the wording just used, while 〜とはいえ concedes a fact.

• 料理ができると言っても、卵焼きぐらいです。

  りょうりができるといっても、たまごやきぐらいです。

  I say I can cook, but it's only things like rolled omelets.

• 旅行と言っても、隣の町に一泊しただけだ。

  りょこうといっても、となりのまちにいっぱくしただけだ。

  I call it a trip, but I just stayed one night in the next town.

• 忙しいと言っても、休む時間ぐらいはありますよ。

  いそがしいといっても、やすむじかんぐらいはありますよ。

  Even though I say I'm busy, I do have time to take a break.
