〜ずにはいられない

Expresses that the feeling or urge is so strong that the speaker cannot hold it back; typically used with verbs of emotion or spontaneous reaction such as 笑う, 泣く, 思う, 言う. It is a written or somewhat literary form, a little stiffer than 〜ないではいられない, and is normally about the speaker's own uncontrollable reaction, not about obligation. Remember the irregular せずには (not しずには).

• あの映画を見ると、泣かずにはいられない。

  あのえいがをみると、なかずにはいられない。

  Whenever I watch that movie, I can't help crying.

• 彼の話を聞いて、笑わずにはいられなかった。

  かれのはなしをきいて、わらわずにはいられなかった。

  Hearing his story, I couldn't help laughing.

• これほどの不正を知って、抗議せずにはいられない。

  これほどのふせいをしって、こうぎせずにはいられない。

  Knowing about such injustice, I cannot keep from protesting.
