〜ないではいられない

Almost identical in meaning to 〜ずにはいられない, but softer and more conversational, so it fits spoken Japanese and first-person feelings well. It describes an impulse the speaker cannot resist, often with verbs like 言う, 買う, 心配する, 飲む. It is not used for duties or rules — for 'have no choice but to' use 〜ざるを得ない.

• かわいい猫を見ると、写真を撮らないではいられない。

  かわいいねこをみると、しゃしんをとらないではいられない。

  When I see a cute cat, I just can't help taking a photo.

• あの態度には、一言言わないではいられなかった。

  あのたいどには、ひとこといわないではいられなかった。

  With that attitude of his, I couldn't keep from saying something.

• 子どもの帰りが遅いと、心配しないではいられない。

  こどものかえりがおそいと、しんぱいしないではいられない。

  When my child comes home late, I can't help worrying.
