〜てはいられない

Says that because of the situation, the speaker cannot allow the current state or action to continue and must act. Typical partners are のんびりする, 休む, 待つ, 泣く, 黙る, often after a phrase like こうしては or いつまでも. Do not confuse it with 〜ずにはいられない: that one means 'cannot suppress an urge', whereas 〜てはいられない means 'cannot keep doing it any longer'. The contracted 〜ちゃいられない is casual speech.

• 試験が近いから、遊んではいられない。

  しけんがちかいから、あそんではいられない。

  The exam is near, so I can't afford to be playing around.

• もう九時だ。こうしてはいられない、急ごう。

  もうくじだ。こうしてはいられない、いそごう。

  It's already nine. We can't stay like this — let's hurry.

• みんなが困っているのに、黙ってはいられなかった。

  みんながこまっているのに、だまってはいられなかった。

  With everyone in trouble, I couldn't just stay silent.
