〜にひきかえ

Sets two things side by side as sharp opposites, usually with the speaker's subjective evaluation (praise for one, complaint about the other). It is a written or rather formal spoken expression. Compare 〜に対して, which states an objective contrast without emotional coloring.

• 兄にひきかえ、弟はとてもおとなしい。

  あににひきかえ、おとうとはとてもおとなしいい。

  Unlike his older brother, the younger one is very quiet.

• 去年の猛暑にひきかえ、今年の夏は過ごしやすい。

  きょねんのもうしょにひきかえ、ことしのなつはすごしやすい。

  In contrast to last year's fierce heat, this summer is comfortable.

• 収入が減ったのにひきかえ、支出は увеличиするばかりだ。

  しゅうにゅうがへったのにひきかえ、ししゅつはふえるばかりだ。

  In contrast to my shrinking income, my expenses only keep rising.
