〜にあたり

Marks an important turning point such as a start, ceremony, departure or new project, and the main clause states what one does or should do then. It is formal, used in speeches, greetings and written announcements. Do not use it for everyday, repeated events; for those use 〜とき.

• 開会にあたり、一言ごあいさつ申し上げます。

  かいかいにあたり、ひとことごあいさつもうしあげます。

  On the occasion of this opening, allow me to say a few words.

• 新しい生活を始めるにあたって、必要な物をそろえた。

  あたらしいせいかつをはじめるにあたって、ひつようなものをそろえた。

  In starting my new life, I got together the things I needed.

• 契約にあたり、内容を十分にご確認ください。

  けいやくにあたり、ないようをじゅうぶんにごかくにんください。

  When entering into the contract, please check the details carefully.
