〜くする／〜にする

する here shows that someone intentionally changes or sets something into a certain state: 音を小さくする (turn the sound down), 部屋をきれいにする (make the room clean). With a noun it also expresses choosing something, typically when ordering or deciding: コーヒーにします. Contrast with なる, which describes change occurring on its own.

• テレビの音を小さくしてください。

  テレビのおとをちいさくしてください。

  Please turn the TV sound down.

• 部屋をきれいにしました。

  へやをきれいにしました。

  I made the room clean.

• わたしは紅茶にします。

  わたしはこうちゃにします。

  I'll have black tea.
