〜がほしい

ほしい is an い-adjective meaning the speaker desires an object, so the thing wanted is marked with が, not を. It is used for the speaker's own desire or, in questions, for the listener's; for a third person you need 〜をほしがっている. To say you want to do an action, use V-ますstem + たい instead. Saying 〜がほしい directly to a superior can sound blunt.

• 新しいかばんがほしいです。

  あたらしいかばんがほしいです。

  I want a new bag.

• 今は何もほしくない。

  いまはなにもほしくない。

  I don't want anything right now.

• 誕生日に何がほしいですか。

  たんじょうびになにがほしいですか。

  What do you want for your birthday?
