〜たり〜たりする

This lists two (sometimes more) representative actions out of several, without saying they happened in that order. The final する carries the tense and politeness: 〜たりしました, 〜たりしたいです. Unlike the て-form, which lines up actions in sequence, 〜たり〜たり gives examples, so it is common when describing a weekend or a habit.

• 日曜日は本を読んだり音楽を聞いたりします。

  にちようびはほんをよんだりおんがくをきいたりします。

  On Sundays I read books, listen to music, and so on.

• 公園で子どもたちが走ったり歌ったりしていた。

  こうえんでこどもたちがはしったりうたったりしていた。

  The children were running around and singing in the park.

• 休みには温泉へ行ったり買い物をしたりしたいです。

  やすみにはおんせんへいったりかいものをしたりしたいです。

  On my days off I want to do things like go to a hot spring and go shopping.
