〜ながら

Two actions are done simultaneously by the same person; the main action comes in the second clause, and the ながら clause is the accompanying one. The subject of both verbs must be identical, so you cannot use it for two different people acting at once. Tense and politeness are shown only by the final verb: 聞きながら話しました.

• 音楽を聞きながら勉強します。

  おんがくをききながらべんきょうします。

  I study while listening to music.

• 歩きながらスマホを見ないでください。

  あるきながらスマホをみないでください。

  Please don't look at your phone while walking.

• コーヒーを飲みながら友だちと話しました。

  コーヒーをのみながらともだちとはなしました。

  I chatted with a friend over a cup of coffee.
