〜に（相手・対象）

This に marks the person or thing that receives the action — the recipient of giving, telling, phoning, writing, teaching, asking, and so on. It answers the question 'to whom?' and is used with verbs like あげる, 送る, 言う, 聞く, 電話する, 見せる. Do not replace it with を, which marks the direct object (the thing given), while に marks the person given to.

• 母に電話します。

  ははにでんわします。

  I'll call my mother.

• 友だちに手紙を書きました。

  ともだちにてがみをかきました。

  I wrote a letter to my friend.

• 先生に日本語を習っています。

  せんせいににほんごをならっています。

  I'm learning Japanese from my teacher.
