〜ものではない

States a piece of common sense or social morality: this is not how people should behave. It is typically said by an older or senior person to a younger one, so using it to a superior sounds rude. Unlike 〜てはいけない, which forbids a specific act in a specific situation, 〜ものではない appeals to general decency; the casual spoken form is 〜もんじゃない.

• 食べ物を残すものではないよ。

  たべものを のこす ものでは ないよ。

  You shouldn't leave food uneaten.

• 人の悪口を言うものではありません。

  ひとの わるくちを いう ものでは ありません。

  One should not speak ill of others.

• そんな失礼な言い方をするもんじゃない。

  そんな しつれいな いいかたを する もんじゃない。

  That's no way to talk to people.
