〜というものだ

Used to sum up a situation with a confident judgement or evaluation: 'that really is X'. It often appears with words like 常識, 無理, 甘い, ひどい and carries the speaker's emotional conviction. It is a written or somewhat formal spoken expression; note that な形容詞 and 名詞 take no だ before というものだ, and that the similar-looking 〜というものではない means 'it's not necessarily the case that'.

• 一日でこれを全部覚えるのは無理というものだ。

  いちにちで これを ぜんぶ おぼえるのは むり という ものだ。

  Memorizing all of this in one day is simply impossible.

• 困っている人を助けるのが人間というものだ。

  こまって いる ひとを たすけるのが にんげん という ものだ。

  Helping people in trouble—that's what being human means.

• 努力もしないで成功を望むのは、甘いというものです。

  どりょくも しないで せいこうを のぞむのは、あまい という ものです。

  Expecting success without any effort is just wishful thinking.
