〜に先立って

Indicates preparation or action carried out before an important event such as an opening ceremony, a launch, negotiations or a trip. It belongs to formal written and announcement style; 〜に先立ち is the still stiffer form used in speeches, and 〜に先立つ modifies a following noun. Unlike the everyday 〜前に, it cannot be used for small daily actions (×食事に先立って手を洗う).

• 開会式に先立って、記念写真を撮影します。

  かいかいしきに さきだって、きねんしゃしんを さつえいします。

  Prior to the opening ceremony, we will take a commemorative photo.

• 新製品の発売に先立ち、記者会見が行われた。

  しんせいひんの はつばいに さきだち、きしゃかいけんが おこなわれた。

  Ahead of the new product's release, a press conference was held.

• 工事を始めるに先立って、住民への説明会が開かれた。

  こうじを はじめるに さきだって、じゅうみんへの せつめいかいが ひらかれた。

  Before construction began, a briefing session for residents was held.
