〜のもとで／〜のもとに

Shows the influence, supervision or conditions under which something is done: 先生の指導のもとで, 親の保護のもとで, 〜という条件のもとに. 〜のもとで tends to be used with a person or place where the action takes place, while 〜のもとに is more common with abstract conditions, principles or slogans, though the two often overlap. It is a formal written expression, frequent in reports and news.

• 田中先生の指導のもとで研究を進めている。

  たなかせんせいの しどうの もとで けんきゅうを すすめて いる。

  I am carrying out my research under Professor Tanaka's guidance.

• 子どもたちは親の保護のもとで安心して暮らしている。

  こどもたちは おやの ほごの もとで あんしんして くらして いる。

  The children live securely under their parents' protection.

• 内容は口外しないという条件のもとに、資料が公開された。

  ないようは こうがい しないと いう じょうけんの もとに、しりょうが こうかいされた。

  The documents were made available on condition that the contents not be disclosed.
