〜をはじめとする

Used to name one outstanding, representative member of a group and imply that many others of the same kind follow. 〜をはじめとする directly modifies a following noun (社長をはじめとする社員たち), while 〜をはじめ(として) works adverbially in the sentence. It belongs to formal written or announcement-style Japanese (news, speeches, guidebooks) and is not used for a mere random example — the item named must be the most important or first-ranked one.
