〜たきり／〜きり

With V-た + きり, the speaker says that after that one action nothing further followed, usually completing the sentence with a negative or with 〜ない (出かけたきり帰ってこない). It carries a feeling of surprise, worry or regret at the unexpected lack of continuation. After a noun or counter, きり simply means 'only' (二人きり, 一度きり), similar to だけ but stressing that there is nothing else.

• 部屋には私たち二人きりだった。

  へやにはわたしたちふたりきりだった。

  There were only the two of us in the room.

• 兄は朝出かけたきり、まだ帰ってこない。

  あにはあさでかけたきり、まだかえってこない。

  My brother went out in the morning and hasn't come back yet.

• 彼女とは去年会ったきりで、その後連絡も取っていない。

  かのじょとはきょねんあったきりで、そのごれんらくもとっていない。

  I last saw her a year ago, and we haven't been in touch since.
