〜ずにはすまない／〜ないではすまない

States that, given the circumstances and social common sense, one cannot avoid doing something — an apology, compensation, a resignation. The obligation comes from society's or the other party's expectations, not from the speaker's own wish. Typical verbs are 謝る, 弁償する, 説明する, 責任を取る. Unlike 〜なければならない, it implies that not doing it simply would not be socially tolerated.

• 借りた本を汚したのだから、弁償せずにはすまないだろう。

  かりたほんをよごしたのだから、べんしょうせずにはすまないだろう。

  Since I stained the book I borrowed, I'll have no choice but to pay for it.

• これだけ迷惑をかけたのだから、直接謝らないではすまない。

  これだけめいわくをかけたのだから、ちょくせつあやまらないではすまない。

  Having caused this much trouble, I can't get by without apologizing in person.

• 問題が公になった以上、社長が責任を取らずにはすまないだろう。

  もんだいがおおやけになったいじょう、しゃちょうがせきにんをとらずにはすまないだろう。

  Now that the problem has become public, the president will have to take responsibility.
