〜を余儀なくされる

A stiff written expression meaning that external circumstances leave a person or organization no option but to accept an unwanted outcome. The noun before it is usually a change-of-state noun such as 中止, 変更, 撤退, 辞任, 入院. The person affected is the subject with 〜される; when the cause itself is the subject, use 〜を余儀なくさせる. It is common in news reports and formal documents, not in conversation.

  たいふうのため、しあいはちゅうしをよぎなくされた。

  Because of the typhoon, the match had to be called off.

• 病気が悪化し、彼は退学を余儀なくされた。

  As his illness worsened, he was forced to drop out of school.
