〜をよそに

Indicates that someone acts while paying no attention to others' feelings, worries, opposition or the surrounding situation. The noun is usually something belonging to other people: 心配, 反対, 不安, 批判, 騒ぎ. The speaker's tone is often critical or at least detached, so it is not used for one's own actions. It is a written, somewhat literary expression often seen in news and narration.

• 親の心配をよそに、彼は一人で世界を旅している。

  おやのしんぱいをよそに、かれはひとりでせかいをたびしている。

  Ignoring his parents' worries, he is traveling the world alone.

• 住民の反対をよそに、工事が始まった。

  じゅうみんのはんたいをよそに、こうじがはじまった。

  Despite the residents' opposition, construction began.

• 周囲の騒ぎをよそに、彼女は黙々と作業を続けていた。

  しゅういのさわぎをよそに、かのじょはもくもくとさぎょうをつづけていた。

  Oblivious to the commotion around her, she went on working in silence.
