〜といえども

A formal, written concessive: it names something one would expect to be an exception and then denies that expectation. It often follows nouns of authority or ability (専門家, 社長, 子供) or quantity expressions with いくら〜. In speech people would say 〜でも; 〜といえども sounds stiff and is typical of speeches, editorials and legal-style prose.

• 子供といえども、許されない行為だ。

  こどもといえども、ゆるされないこういだ。

  Even for a child, that is unforgivable behaviour.

• いくら親しい友人といえども、礼儀は必要だ。

  いくらしたしいゆうじんといえども、れいぎはひつようだ。

  No matter how close a friend may be, courtesy is still required.

• 専門家といえども、地震の予測は難しい。

  せんもんかといえども、じしんのよそくはむずかしい。

  Even experts find earthquakes hard to predict.
