〜より

より marks the standard of comparison, i.e. the thing that comes off worse or lower. The word before より is the one being compared against, so 'A は B より高い' means A is more expensive than B. It is very often paired with 〜のほうが, and in questions the answer usually uses のほうが〜より.

• 今日は昨日より寒いです。

  きょうはきのうよりさむいです。

  Today is colder than yesterday.

• этот… 電車はバスより速いです。

  でんしゃはバスよりはやいです。

  The train is faster than the bus.

• 兄は私より三つ年上です。

  あにはわたしよりみっつとしうえです。

  My older brother is three years older than me.
