〜に至る／〜に至っては

〜に至る describes a process finally arriving at a serious or extreme endpoint (離婚に至る, 倒産するに至った); 〜に至って(初めて) stresses that only at that late stage did something happen. 〜に至っては singles out the most extreme example from several and comments on it, usually with surprise or disapproval. All are formal written Japanese found in reports and news; in speech the plainer 〜になる or 〜の場合は is normal.

• 話し合いは決裂し、ついに訴訟に至った。

  はなしあいはけつれつし、ついにそしょうにいたった。

  The talks broke down and finally led to a lawsuit.

• 病気になるに至って、初めて健康の大切さがわかった。

  びょうきになるにいたって、はじめてけんこうのたいせつさがわかった。

  Only when I fell ill did I finally realise the importance of health.

• 遅刻する社員も多いが、彼に至っては無断欠勤までしている。

  ちこくするしゃいんもおおいが、かれにいたってはむだんけっきんまでしている。

  Many employees come late, but as for him, he even skips work without notice.
