〜うる／〜えない

Expresses theoretical possibility or impossibility of something happening, not personal skill. The affirmative is read うる or える, but the negative is always えない (ありえない). Formal and written; it attaches mainly to non-volitional verbs such as 起こる, 考える, 想像する, so use 〜できる for ordinary ability.

• そんなことは起こりえない。

  そんなことはおこりえない。

  Such a thing could never happen.

• 地震はいつでも起こりうる災害だ。

  じしんはいつでもおこりうるさいがいだ。

  An earthquake is a disaster that can occur at any time.

• 彼が裏切るなど、考ええないことだ。

  かれがうらぎるなど、かんがええないことだ。

  That he would betray us is unthinkable.
