〜かたわら

Indicates that besides one's main long-term occupation or activity, one also does something else regularly. Both actions are ongoing over a long period, so it is not used for two short actions in one moment (use 〜ながら for that). Formal written style, common when describing careers or biographies.

• 彼は会社勤めのかたわら、小説を書いている。

  かれはかいしゃづとめのかたわら、しょうせつをかいている。

  Alongside his company job, he writes novels.

• 母は家事のかたわら、日本語を教えている。

  はははかじのかたわら、にほんごをおしえている。

  Besides doing the housework, my mother teaches Japanese.

• 彼女は大学で研究するかたわら、ボランティア活動にも取り組んでいる。

  かのじょはだいがくでけんきゅうするかたわら、ぼらんてぃあかつどうにもとりくんでいる。

  While doing research at the university, she is also engaged in volunteer work.
