〜に照らして

Means to judge or compare something against a standard such as 法律・基準・経験・過去の例. The image is of 'shining a light on' the case with that standard to see what follows. Very formal and mostly written (legal, administrative, academic). It resembles 〜に即して, but 〜に照らして emphasises comparing/checking against a criterion, while 〜に即して emphasises acting in conformity with it.

• 法律に照らして判断します。

  ほうりつにてらしてはんだんします。

  We will judge the matter in light of the law.

• 過去の例に照らして考えると、今回も同じ結果になるだろう。

  かこのれいにてらしてかんがえると、こんかいもおなじけっかになるだろう。

  Judging by past cases, the result will probably be the same this time.

• 国際基準に照らせば、この制度は時代遅れだと言わざるを得ない。

  こくさいきじゅんにてらせば、このせいどはじだいおくれだといわざるをえない。

  In light of international standards, we cannot but call this system outdated.
