〜で一番〜

This is the superlative: で marks the group or range (a place, a category, a set of people) and 一番 means 'number one, most'. A common question form is 〜で何が一番〜ですか / だれが一番〜ですか. Note that 中で is often added after a listed group (この三つの中で一番〜).

• クラスで一番背が高いです。

  クラスでいちばんせがたかいです。

  He is the tallest in the class.

• 日本で一番高い山は富士山です。

  にほんでいちばんたかいやまはふじさんです。

  The highest mountain in Japan is Mt. Fuji.

• 一年で一番好きな季節は秋です。

  いちねんでいちばんすきなきせつはあきです。

  My favourite season of the year is autumn.
