〜をもって

A formal, written expression with two main uses: (1) the means or method by which something is done (書面をもって, 実力をもって), and (2) the point in time at which something begins or ends (本日をもって, 3月31日をもって). The time usage appears in announcements, notices and ceremonies, almost always with verbs like 終了する・閉店する・辞任する. In everyday speech you would use で instead; をもって sounds stiff and official, and the emphatic variant をもちまして is used in very polite announcements.

• 当店は本日をもって閉店いたします。

  とうてんはほんじつをもってへいてんいたします。

  This shop will close for good as of today.

• 審査の結果は書面をもってお知らせします。

  しんさのけっかはしょめんをもっておしらせします。

  The results of the screening will be announced in writing.

• 以上をもちまして、本日の式典を終了いたします。

  いじょうをもちまして、ほんじつのしきてんをしゅうりょういたします。

  With that, today's ceremony is concluded.
