〜きらいがある

Used to point out an undesirable tendency or inclination in a person, group or society. It is a written, somewhat formal expression often found in commentary or criticism, and is rarely used about oneself. Unlike 〜がちだ, which can describe simple frequency, 〜きらいがある always carries a negative evaluation of a habitual disposition.

• 彼は物事を大げさに言うきらいがある。

  かれはものごとをおおげさにいうきらいがある。

  He has a tendency to exaggerate things.

• 最近の学生は自分で考えず、すぐ答えを求めるきらいがある。

  さいきんのがくせいはじぶんでかんがえず、すぐこたえをもとめるきらいがある。

  Students these days tend to look for answers right away instead of thinking for themselves.

• わが社は前例を重んじるあまり、新しい試みを避けるきらいがある。

  わがしゃはぜんれいをおもんじるあまり、あたらしいこころみをさけるきらいがある。

  Our company values precedent so much that it tends to avoid new attempts.
