〜こととて

A very formal, archaic-sounding way of giving a reason, typically when apologizing or asking for the listener's understanding. The second clause usually contains an apology, a request for forgiveness, or a statement of unavoidable circumstance. It appears mainly in письменных greetings, formal letters and set business phrases; it is not used in casual speech.

• 慣れぬこととて、失礼があればお許しください。

  なれぬこととて、しつれいがあればおゆるしください。

  As I am not used to this, please forgive me if I am rude.

• 休日のこととて、連絡が遅れてしまいました。

  きゅうじつのこととて、れんらくがおくれてしまいました。

  As it was a holiday, my reply was delayed.

• 子どものしたこととて、どうかご容赦くださいませ。

  こどものしたこととて、どうかごようしゃくださいませ。

  It was done by a child, so please be lenient.
