〜ことなしに

Indicates that something is done without the preceding action taking place, or that a result is impossible unless that action is performed. It is a formal, written equivalent of 〜ないで／〜ずに, and is very often followed by a negative or potential-negative ending such as 〜ない／〜られない. Learners should note that with a negative ending it expresses a necessary condition: 'you cannot X without Y'.

• 努力することなしに成功はない。

  どりょくすることなしにせいこうはない。

  There is no success without effort.

• 彼は誰にも相談することなしに会社を辞めた。

  かれはだれにもそうだんすることなしにかいしゃをやめた。

  He quit the company without consulting anyone.

• 痛みを伴うことなしに、この改革を進めることはできない。

  いたみをともなうことなしに、このかいかくをすすめることはできない。

  This reform cannot be carried out without pain.
