〜そばから

Expresses that the result of an action is undone or negated almost immediately, and that this happens over and over. It typically conveys the speaker's irritation or resignation, so it is not used for one-off events or for welcome results. Compare 〜たとたん, which describes a single sudden occurrence without the repeated, frustrating nuance.

• 片付けるそばから子どもが散らかす。

  かたづけるそばからこどもがちらかす。

  No sooner do I tidy up than the children make a mess again.

• 覚えたそばから忘れてしまうので、単語が増えない。

  おぼえたそばからわすれてしまうので、たんごがふえない。

  I forget words as soon as I learn them, so my vocabulary never grows.

• 注意するそばから同じミスを繰り返すのだから困ったものだ。

  ちゅういするそばからおなじミスをくりかえすのだからこまったものだ。

  He repeats the same mistake right after being warned — it's hopeless.
